M. K. Sarbievius Courtyard
Walking out of the Library Courtyard
through a metal gate from the beginning of the
20th century, we end up in the spacious M.K.Sarbievius Courtyard.
Near its west wing,
above the gate, is a white marble memorial plaque dedicated to the poet
M.K.Sarbievius. The south wing
of the courtyard has massive two-storey high
buttresses with niches, and a passage-way with granite steps ascending to
connect with the Great Courtyard. Above the passage-way is a memorial
commemorating the 100th anniversary of the "Varpas" newspaper, published
by V.Kudirka. The west wing is the three-storey high library building.
During the time of the Academy, this courtyard was known as the "domestic"
yard, for its north and
east wings housed maintenance buildings. Once the
Jesuit Order was abolished, these buildings lost their original function.
They are now newly restored, and, together with the little birch tree that
grows in the courtyard, belong to the philology faculty.
