German Jesuit, universal scientist- (who wrote fundamental works on physics, chemistry, geography, geology, astronomy, biology, medicine, music, philology, history), who lived in Rome and lectured at Collegium Romanum, Athanasius Kircher‘s (1602–1680) treatise The Underground World..., considered as one of the first attempts to describe the inner structure of the Earth. It contains fundamental knowledge of astronomy, geology, palaeontology, volcanology and other fields of natural sciences. The book is illustrated with copper engravings, frequently the illustrations represent the events and natural phenomena observed by the author himself
