Vilnius will always
retain its eternal character - that of a real city and a real capital, with a great
history and with the indelible stamp of spiritual noblesse, acquired over the centuries.

The unique photographs in this exhibition
show the distinctive and unparalleled old city of Vilnius. Nature
and the harmonious totality of its elements played a strong determining role in the
expansion and inner structure of this city. Old Vilnius emerged over hundreds of years,
expanding, changing, and embodying the creative imagination and experience of many
generations of architects and builders from Lithuania and abroad; under the care of
generous and perceptive benefactors, it became a city rich in architectural treasures and
urban harmony. Photographs have preserved churches which no longer exist, and views of
nature surrounding Vilnius at that time; they have captured details of past events, and
the daily lives of the townspeople.
More than ninety photographs from the Vilnius University
Library are presented in this exhibition. They include unique works by internationally
acclaimed photographers Józef Czechowicz and Stanisław Filibert Fleury, as well as by Nikolay Ostankovich, Isaac
Tzinovek (Aizik Cinovec), and Miron and Leon
Boutkowsky. These old photographs - eloquent witnesses
to the past of Vilnius and to the history of
Lithuanian photography - are one more distinctive documentary source of the history of
this city. |
