With regard to traditions of old libraries the Library is compiling various pieces of art. Graphic works have been collected and stored in the Library since the beginning of XIX c. when in 1805 the Department of Engraving and the Study of Graphics were established at Vilnius University.
Major part of the collection comprises old graphics (about 12,000 items) dating back to XVI-XIX c. – artworks of Lithuanian, Russian, Polish artists and other painters from European countries.
Since 1969 this unique part of the Library collection was supplemented with modern Lithuanian graphics. Major part of the collection contains graphic prints of modern Lithuanian artists, book illustrations, drawings, sketches, posters.
Graphic arts collection is supplemented with works of foreign artists, ex-librises collection and authors' books.
At the moment Division of Graphic Arts holdings contain over 97 000 artworks.
