More and more research funding organisations, including the Research Council of Lithuania and the European Union, require to submit a data management plan (DMP) with a project application or when signing a funding agreement.

A DMP is a document drawn up at the beginning of the research project that provides information on collection, protection and availability of research data generated by the project. The DMP explains how the data will be managed throughout the project and after its completion. It states what measures will be taken to ensure reliable storage and backup, outlines how the data will be made available for re-use and specifies the measures that will be taken to address legal and ethical issues that affect data sharing.

Each institution may have its own requirements regarding the format and the content of the DMP, so it is recommended that researchers follow the guidelines or use the templates provided by the institution the DMP is being prepared for.

Research data management plan implementation costs can be covered by funding institutions or funds from other sources.
