Scientometrics is the study of measuring and analysing science by quantitative methods. One of them, used to assess the impact of research output, is bibliometrics. Bibliometrics are used in the formal evaluation of Lithuania research performance, which is organised and carried out by the Research Council of Lithuania in accordance with the regulated documents.
Bibliometrics could be used to find quality scientific information, as well as identify the impact of research on other research.
Research evaluation should be based on both quantitative and qualitative metrics. There is a growing number of initiatives in the global academic community to promote more qualitative research, such as the following:
- Principles of research evaluation declared in the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics are designed as good practices for qualitative evaluation of scholarly output;
- Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) gives recommendations for research evaluation not to rely on the journal’s citation indicators entirely and focus not only on scholarly articles, but also on other forms of research publishing.
