Naujiena ENSaturday, 5 March is known as the International Open Data Day. It offers the possibility to become aware of the benefits gained by the humanity from data opened to the public by administrative authorities, organisations and enterprises.

Open data are statistical, administrative, research and other data that are available for anyone to use and distribute without having to fulfil any requirements other than the requirement of attribution or the requirement to share the results deriving from the use of the data under the same conditions.

Open Data Day was instituted in 2010 by the Open Knowledge Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that advocates the opening up of knowledge and non-personal data to all members of the society. Last year’s Open Data Day featured more than 300 local events around the world such as hackatons and educational campaigns. This year’s Open Data Day focuses on five key areas in which open data can make a difference:

  • Environment
  • Public money flows
  • Open mapping
  • Equal development
  • Oceans

You too are invited to make use of the potential of open data! If you are unsure where to begin, Lithuanian public sector open data and examples of applications putting it to good use can be found on the Lithuanian Open Data Portal. Open research data can be found and published through the National Open Access Research Data Archive (MIDAS).
