The modernisation of the National Open Access Research Data Archive (MIDAS) is moving forward.  One of the most notable improvements in the authenticated user environment is the updated data publishing process. The new publishing workflow will allow users to automatically assign a DOI persistent identifier to their datasets upon publication on the MIDAS portal. Everything the user will need to do is tick a box when publishing the dataset. However, it should be noted that the option of automatically assigning DOIs will be available only if the datasets, and not solely their metadata, are made public.

In pursuit of better metadata quality, “Research Field” and “Keywords” metadata fields are now mandatory for all newly created research projects. Moreover, the publishing workflow will include a step requiring the author to choose a licence for the project from a drop-down list. This will ensure that research data published on the MIDAS portal always come with clearly indicated usage conditions. Authors will be able to choose from CC0 public domain dedication, four different Creative Commons licences (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, CC BY-NC-SA) and two open software licences (GNU GPL and MIT).

A step-by-step instruction of the new publication process can be found in the MIDAS User Guide.

The modernisation of the National Open Access Research Data Archive (MIDAS) is funded by the European Social Fund 2014–2020 Lithuanian Operational Programme as part of the project No. 09.3.1-ESFA-V-738 “Optimising the network of Higher Education Institutions and improving the quality of studies by merging Šiauliai University with Vilnius University”.
