MODUS copyOpen Science principles are becoming more and more important not only to members of Vilnius University but also to the global research community. On 22 February this year, Vilnius University Senate has approved the University's Open Science Policy Guidelines. Through this document, Vilnius University acknowledges openness as a core value and asserts the principle that scholarship, research processes and the results of research should be “as open as possible, as closed as necessary“ as one of its research policy goals. Vilnius University strives that the Open Science principles and methods laid out in the Guidelines be rewarded and encouraged.

As a response to the newly approved University's Open Science policy, Vilnius University Library invites you to the online lecture “Open Science and Scientific Excellence”, with the hope that this will provide an opportunity for discussion about the Open Science principles and their impact on academic practices. The lecture will be read by Magdalena Szuflita-Żurawska (Gdańsk University of Technology).

The lecture will address the links between the implementation of Open Science principles and the strive for scientific excellence. Achieving scientific excellence is a core component of strategic plans for all academic institutions that driving up rivalry and pressure. To encourage scholars to increase academic productivity and overcome negative constraints, academia needs to seek a balance progression of fulfilling goals and employees’ well-being.

Topics to be discussed:

- Different definitions of scientific excellence;
- Promoting publications in top journals (Q1, Q2, metrics, open access);
- Promoting international grants: ERC, Horizon and their Open Access and Open Data requirements;
- Support for academic staff: Data stewards and Data managers;
- Support for breakthrough research and Open Infrastructures;
- International collaboration;
- Establishment of research institution (ERC grant holders, leaders of many projects, people with very high scientific records).

About the speaker:

Magdalena Szuflita-Żurawska is Head of the Scientific Information Section at the Gdansk University of Technology Library. Her main areas of research and interests include Open Access, Open Research Data, information literacy, scholarly communication, and bibliometrics. Previously, she served as Library Assistant in Health Sciences Library at University College Dublin, Ireland. She holds a BA in Librarianship from Warsaw University, Poland and a Master of Science in Digital Library Management from Boras University, Sweden. She is a PhD Candidate in economics and management, and her research dissertation will cover topics related to the motivation to achieve scientific excellence.

Magdalena has participated in numerous conferences and workshops, both national and international, and has delivered trainings on research data management and data management plans at different Polish universities. She is a member of IATUL Special Interest Group for Library Services related to Research Data Management, SIG-DATA, engaged in CESAER’s activities, substantive coordinator of training programme POWER 3.4, and leader of Competency Centre at Bridge of Knowledge Project. She actively participates in the activities of several major Open Science promoting organisations and initiatives: European Open Scince Cloud (EOSC), GoFAIR, Open AIRE, and Research Data Alliance (RDA).
