An exhibition of the works of graphic artist Žibuntas Mikšys stored in the library's Graphics Cabinet has been opened in the Small Exhibition XXI-XXII of the VU library.
“Usually, Mikšys is defined as a graphic artist. He indeed uses this media in his creation most often. Graphic art enabled Žibuntas to merge three vitally important areas of culture that is theatre, art and literature. Leaving aside the early figurative compositions of expressionist stylistics and the landscapes that occasionally appeared in his works later, all other Mikšys’ creations (letter compositions, illustrations, book plates, stylizations) in one way or another are related to book, text, and theatre, with the world of imagination that can be taken to any place of the world enabling us to immerse ourselves in it while being in any place of the world, although better in places such as Venice or Paris, which, by themselves, stimulate imagination and inspire creative ideas”, says Prof. Dr Giedrė Jankevičiūtė.
Artist Mikšys was born on 12 December in Kaunas. His mother Zuzana Arlauskaitė–Mikšienė was a Lithuanian and American actor and director. The artist took art classes with sculptor Alfonsas Janulis. In 1944, Mikšys emigrated to Germany. In 1946–1949, he studied painting and theatre costume in Nuremberg and Stuttgart art academies, while in 1947–1949 he studied directing at Kunibert Gensichen Drama School. For several years, he lived in the USA. Since 1962, he lived in Paris. In 1979–1988, Mikšys taught Lithuanian language and history in the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (INALCO) in Paris. He was a chairperson of the council and the board of the Lithuanian Community of France.
Žibuntas Mikšys had donated to Vilnius University Library many of his creations, books, documents and correspondence, valuable art pieces by foreign artists and old graphic prints. A large part of these creations is presently displayed in the exhibition dedicated to Žibuntas Mikšys, which is held at Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum. It is for the first time that the legacy of the artist is presented in such an exhaustive way, at the same time, showing his artistic and intellectual surroundings.
Location: VU Library, Small Exhibition XXI–XXII (2nd floor), Universiteto str. 3
The exhibition will be on display until 23 March 2024.
