Second-year students of the Faculty of Design (Vilnius College) have an opportunity to get to know graphic art and its expression possibilities better. Students carve linoleum, cardboard, and wooden plates. They also try out intaglio printing techniques such as etching and drypoint. Graphic techniques are diverse. They encompass some simple printing methods such as monotype and black and white linoleum engraving. However, other graphic techniques are more complex, and they require diligence and attentiveness. For instance, etching is an intaglio graphic technique. A student must be able to prepare a drawing for this technique, cover the plate with a special varnish, then carve the drawing with a sharp needle, etch it in a special acid, and finally print it on special paper. Having mastered a variety of graphic techniques, the student is able to apply them in other areas of graphic design such as book illustrations, ex libris, and posters. Due to its artistic language possibilities, this technique adds more artistic credibility and charm to students’ works.
