Today we commemorate 13 January – the Day of the Defenders of Freedom – and bring to our memory the significance of the 1991 events for the history of Lithuania, when the hard-worn independence of our country was retained through the courage of united people. The loving freedom people of Lithuania had demonstrated the indomitable will and determination to fight against the grip of the Soviet occupation authorities and defend their honour, dignity, families, and the state.
Let us cherish and celebrate this victory! And let us never forget the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for what we have today - the right to build a free democratic life in a free country.
