The collections of Vilnius University Library have been enriched by one more precious item–Jan Bułhak's “A View of Vilnius”.
The Manuscripts Department of Vilnius University Library has in its holdings not only numerous rare and valuable manuscripts, but also some early photographs. The collection is constantly supplemented with new items that are donated, bequeathed or purchased by librarians. The Manuscript Department has several collections of photography created by the most famous photographers of Vilnius: Stanisław Filibert Fleury, Józef Czechowicz, Jan Bułhak, Edmund and Bolesława Zdanowski. Major part of photographs kept in the Library portrays premises if the old campus of Vilnius University, its interiors as well as the old town of Vilnius.
The collections of Vilnius University Library have been enriched by one more precious item–a photography by Jan Bułhak “A View of Vilnius” which was made in 1912–1915. Jan Bułhak, one of the most eminent photographers of Vilnius of the 20th century, was teaching photography at Vilnius University (then Stefan Batory University), Faculty of Arts. He was encouraged to start photographing Vilnius by the then Dean of the Faculty of Arts Ferdynand Ruszczyc. Although most of photos by Jan Bułhak were made with intention to capture certain objects, they have lots of artistic flair. It is not surprise that Jan Bułhak is considered to be a representative of artistic photography. Vilnius University Library has around 100 photographs by this eminent artist of Vilnius.
