On 15 September, Vilnius University Library has launched a five-part digital exhibition “Tales of Decorated Paper” on Google Arts & Culture, presenting the five earliest paper decoration techniques that were used for the decoration of endpapers and covers of books, furniture, instruments or even wallpaper. In our times such paper is made by only a few artisans, while examples of the paper made centuries ago by the old masters can be seen mostly only in museum and library collections. By opening its collections for the public, Vilnius University Library is inviting to explore how colourful, diverse, and rich these collections can be.

The part A Golden Garden. Brocade Paper invites to explore brocade paper technique.

Brocade paper, similarly to marbled paper, was created while searching for some substitute to costly and exceptional fabrics. Such paper imitated brocade fabric and served as a much cheaper alternative to use in decoration of various objects – boxes, pieces of furniture, clocks, musical instruments and books.

Paste paper invites to explore paste paper – at first sight not-so-sophisticated technique that helps to create relatively modest patterns while employing the simplest materials at hand. As you look around the exhibition, you will come to understand that paper decorated with the help of this simple technique, however, is far from plain or unremarkable.

Considerably changed there, it became a significant part of calligraphy art and illumination of manuscripts. At present marbling technique ebru is a national heritage of Turkey.

On 14 September, Vilnius University Library launches a digital exhibition Tales of Decorated Paper, which not only relays many incredible stories about paper decoration but also introduces you to the five earliest paper decoration techniques from its golden age – the 18th century – that were used for the decoration of endpapers and covers of books, furniture, instruments or even wallpaper.

The five-part tale invites you to explore examples of block-printed, sprinkled, marbled, paste and brocade paper, to admire exquisite patterns and ingenuity of early book creators and decorators, to appreciate the subtlety of fine crafts and the art of decoration. Inspired by the stylistics of Oriental cultures, it combines both abstract geometrical and natural motifs.
